new pizazz for the living room

I had a thrifting adventure last week with my sweet friend, Penny from
At Home in English Valley. I'd been looking for touches of gold for the living
room to give it a warmer look for the fall and winter. I used to be a strictly
silver person, but after seeing gold accessories used in decorating on
several blogs, I realized what a warm touch this color could bring to a room.

I was especially crushing on these candlesticks from CB2 as seen on
the Inspired By Charm blog and was going to order them with a 15% off
promotion code, but when I went to order them, CB2 wasn't
offering them anymore! Doesn't that figure?

All was not lost, however. While thrifting, I found something even better ~
and for half the price of the CB2 candlesticks. Aren't they lovely?

I also found this little gold guy (bottom left in the photo) ~ don't know "what" he is;
Penny thought maybe an eagle? Whatever he is, he's kinda cool and adds a nice
 vibe to my plants.

I struck more gold (no pun intended) with this great little chest that fits
perfectly under the black cabinet.

And...lucky me, I also found this gold tray that now has a home on the bookshelf.
The fall painting is a find from an antique store years ago.

On the other side of the living room, I placed a gold pear (not a thrifting find, but
a HomeGoods one) under a cloche and added a gold kitchen utensil (at least
that's what I think it is - it's an older thrifted find and not sure exactly what it is...
all I know is that I liked it!) to the window shelf above the buffet. I also added two
pieces of fall art between the buffet and window shelf since that area needed a
little something.

Lastly, I know this isn't gold or thrifted, but here's another change I made
in the living room today. I was tired of the brown and white rug in this room;
just tired of all the brown, I guess. So I hauled the rug from the downstairs
family room up to the living room to see how I liked it. I do like it here, but I
think I like it better downstairs. I think I'd rather have a rug with some color
in the living room. In the meantime, it's not as boring as the brown rug!

Joining in this week with Tweak it Tuesday and Inspire Me Tuesday.

  1. I love the botanical vibe you've got going. Tell me what plants you plant in that gravel.

    1. Thanks, Brenda. That gravely dirt is cactus/succulent potting mix that I got at our local nursery. Sorry, but I have no idea what the names of the plants are!

  3. I love all of your thrifty finds! I don't have much gold either but lately I've been admiring gold picture frames; I like the idea of just one gold frame in a grouping on the wall with black ones. I love that white rug, it looks so soft and plush! It must be nice to walk on.

    1. Ooh, one gold-framed piece with a grouping of black ones sounds really nice! I love the white rug - it IS very soft and plush and wonderful to walk on. It was actually better downstairs in front of the family room sofa because the downstairs is a cement floor. When I find a more suitable rug for the living room, the white rug will go back downstairs. The rug was from Home Depot, believe it or not!

  4. Wow Mel, You really had a vision and pulled all those pieces together. I love the way you accesorized the tray and the cloche with the pear is so pretty. I also like your candleholders better. I love shopping with you...we have to go to Ohio to shop with Debby ;-). Love, Penny

  5. I like your gold candlesticks better! The CB2 ones are a little too modern for me. Gold is a lovely color for this fall, like you say it does bring some warmth into a room.

    1. There must've been a reason those CB2 candlesticks weren't available when I went to order them, right? :-) Now that I look back on it, you're right, those candlesticks are just a bit too modern for my tastes and decor.

  6. Great deal in your thrifted candlesticks, I better they are a nicer quality than the new ones.
I like the little black cabinet, it's not new to you, is it?

The little gold bird, he looks like an owl to me
And that toile pot, is that the one that just broke? Surely it was just a spontaneous break, your sweet kitties would hurt anything, would they?

    1. My thrifted candlesticks are definitely a good quality - the little sticker on the bottom says "made in India". They are thick and quite heavy. The CB2 ones look cheap, don't they? Most likely made in China. Hmm, maybe my gold bird IS an owl! Yes, the dark red and white toile pot is the one that my naughty kitty broke this afternoon. :-(

    2. Oops, PS - the black cabinet used to be at the end of the hallway. I now have a couple of stacked vintage suitcases there instead. I blogged about it here: http://comfyhouse.blogspot.com/2013/10/welcome-to-my-home-living-room-tour.html

  7. I was going to say your gold bird looks like an owl, but Rhonda beat me to it. I also think the plant in the pot with the gravelly dirt mix is called a mother-in-law's tongue (?) - I don't know the official name for it.
I long for the day I can have vignettes that don't get played with or have dinosaurs or little cars added to it, but yet I don't. Little by little I'm able to get my "pretties" out again. LOL.
Wish I could come thrifting with you! There is just nothing around here and the Goodwill is getting so expensive. I do enjoy seeing all your fun finds!

    1. It's definitely not mother-in-law's tongue - I have some of that and it's a very tall plant with thick leaves. The one you see in my photo is some sort of succulent. Who knows, one day my vignettes may have cars or little dolls added to them - at least I hope so! There are so many thrifting and antique places around here - wish you could join me! Some of the GW prices here are getting a little expensive, but for the most part, they still remain very reasonable.

  9. Melanie, I'm pretty sure the little gold guy is an owl. I think your gold finds really add warmth to your comfy house (as do those adorable cats!).

  10. Melanie,

I saw you comment at another blog and I realized that I hadn't read one of your posts for a long time. Well, can you believe you are another one that fell off my Blogroll and I had to re-follow. I just don't know what to do about this. Maybe I need to email Google or Blogger or whoever. Anyway, I read your last three posts. You found some great gold touches for your living room (Abby has switched from silver to gold jewelry so I know it's the IN thing!). Everything looks beautiful and such deals! The little gold thingy looks like a penguin to me. I love the candlesticks, too. I would like a small joined set of candlesticks, too. I have a candelabra but it's not right for a table. I love the white rug in your living room. I think it looks very chic. I don't need an area rug but while looking at welcome mats at Target, I looked at the area rugs and some are really sharp and the prices aren't bad at all.

Your recent recipes are fantastic and I enjoyed hearing about your trip to Geneva. We go to Cedarberg next week so I will get my small town fix!! :)

    XO,
    Jane

    1. That is so weird that blogs are falling off your blog roll. Have you googled the problem to see if there's any solutions out there? If not, you'll probably have to email Blogger. You know, I believe you are spot on with guessing that bird is a penguin! Now that I look at it - I think it is, too! I just found a rug on overstock for the kitchen...it's supposed to be here by Tues. Can't wait to see how it looks. You will have a blast in Cedarburg...hope you have good weather!

  12. Hi Melanie,

I immediately noticed that white rug as I was scrolling down your pics when I first clicked on to your post and I think it refreshes the room, lightens it up and perhaps that's where the pizazz comes from! All you new touches are charming and the turquoise against the orange is a combination I find myself gravitating towards in blogs this year! Lovely!

    Have a nice weekend!

    1. I like the white rug too, Poppy - but had to move it back downstairs. :-( I just wrote another blog post about that (Oct 21st).
