quiet easter ~ and new living room drapes

Easter was a rather quiet holiday. It was the three of us, plus my mom, father-in-law,
and two of my sisters-in-law. We kept it casual. Instead of having a fancy ham dinner,
we decided to do ham sandwiches with sides. I baked a spiral ham and put out rye
bread, rolls, onions, tomatoes, and romaine. Sides were homemade coleslaw and
potato salad, fruit salad, and baked beans. Dessert was lemon bars (I do make mean
lemon bars, if I do say so myself!) and my mom's homemade pecan pie.

I only took a few pictures yesterday, like these cute little peat pots with
wheat grass that Penny made. I put them on top of my microwave with
bunnies peeking out.

My mom brought her sweet, little dog ~ LuLu.

Who doesn't like a man that does dishes?!

And, now on to the drapes...these are the ones I bought at IKEA.
I had them hemmed, we hung them up, and I really like them! I think
they soften up the living room. However, the panel on the right is driving
me batty. See how the inside part doesn't hang exactly right? It turns
in in the middle, then juts out at the bottom. The left panel hangs perfectly!
Any ideas how I can "train" a curtain to hang properly?!

I also put the console table back by the front door, underneath the mirror.
I think it looks best here. I had moved it into our bedroom and it was just "OK".
This is going to be its permanent spot. (Pinky swear.)

I like how the curtains soften up the starkness of the fireplace wall, too.

Thanks so much for visiting ~ I love my blogger friends and all your comments!

  2. Switch them.... put the one on the right to the left and vise versa until it hangs properly.... but make sure the right side one hangs okay for you on the right side of it...Goodness does this make sense??? I hope you know what I mean... Your curtains are gorgeous...Have a great day.... Lisa

  4. I like your new curtains . . . What about putting the right one on the left side, the left on the right and see what happens . . . Do you actually have windows open in these photos . . .

    1. Great minds think alike, Lynne - Lisa (above) suggested the same thing! No way do I have windows open today - it's cold! I just have the wooden blinds pulled up. :-)

    2. I think Lisa and Lynne have the right idea.
My husband didn't do the Sunday dishes but he did cook the main course and my daughter in laws did the dishes.

  5. Perhaps a curtain weight on that side? Yes, there are such a thing. They are small metal disks used to make curtains hang nicely. I'm sure they have them at Joann Etc.

  6. Would steaming them help? And I like Robin's idea of curtain weights, too.

    1. They've already been steamed cleaned, but thanks for the idea. :-)

  7. LOL...love the dishwasher! My guy does the supper dishes most every night. :) Your Easter meal sounds perfect to me. :) I wonder if you put a small weight in the hem, would that help the curtain hang better? Like some coins or a metal washer, etc.

    1. Yep, I'm going to try the weights and then switching the direction in how they're hung. We'll see what happens!

  8. Hi Melanie,

Your Easter sounds peaceful and happy! Nothing like family (and good friends!) to make a holiday special. Re: the 'crooked' curtains...Lynn's suggestion should do the trick. Even so, they already are quite charming, adding a special curviness to the masculine lines of the fireplace area!

  9. The drapes are lovely, and they do soften the room. I have a solution for your problem with the 'turny' one ! Whenever I hang new cutains, I take 4 or 5 wide strips of some kind of fabric - such as an old towel or an old t-shirt. Make the strips wide and then gently 'pleat' the curtains the way you want them. Take your wide strip of old t-shirt or old towel, and tie it gently around the gathered up curtains . Space them apart until you have 4 or 5 strips tied , so your curtains are gathered together with the ties around them. Make sure you do it carefully, so when you untie them in a week or so, they will have nice, gentle 'pleats' going exactly how you want them It does work !

  12. It looks like your Easter was fun! Your mom's dog is precious, does it get along with your kitties? And what a sweet hubby, if I saw my guy doing dishes I would faint!

I am loving your curtains...they really do brighten up the room and almost give it a summery feeling (if we can remember what that was like!). It looks like you got a lot of good advice on the problem you have with them. I am always fiddling with mine because I have two panels on each side and they gap apart no matter how much I play with the, It looks tacky. Any suggestions?

Well, I have my post up about yesterday's lunch. I had so much fun! And yes, we will meet closer to your house next time and hopefully I won't get lost! :(

    XO,
    Jane

    1. LuLu gets along great with the cats and vice-versa. I think it's because LuLu is so tiny (and well behaved), because normally my cats are freaked out by dogs.

My hubby always helps with dishes and clean up ~ he's a great guy. As for your curtains, I'm not quite sure what you mean. Send me a picture!

  13. I have no idea how to train curtains to hang properly but if you can train that man to wash dishes, you can do anything!
