weekend shenanigans

Yesterday evening as the sun was going down, I thought I'd grab my camera and head outside to take some photos. The sky was so beautiful. I snapped some photos, then headed back into the house. I was going to feed the cats their dinner, then heat up some leftover soup for myself. Brian was working and wouldn't be home for another couple of hours. I wasn't planning on watching the Super Bowl, as I'm not a football fan (unless it had've been the Chicago Bears playing, but I won't hold my breath on that one).

I turned the doorknob to go into the house and the door was locked. At first I was confused, because you need a key to lock the deadbolt. I hadn't brought my keys outside with me, and I never lock the door when I'm only going to the side of the house for a moment. I tried the door again and then realized it was the doorknob that was locked. There is a turn knob on the doorknob inside the house. We always leave those unlocked. There was another momentary "what the hell" pause, and then I remembered that my mom and aunt had left my house through the front door the day before, while I had left the house through the garage door. Aha! I'm guessing one of them turned the turn knob from force of habit at their own house.

Good thing I had my phone with me, because it was darn cold out there!I called a nearby friend and she came and rescued me. I ended up watching part of the Super Bowl with Rescue Friend and her boyfriend. I was in bleached stained yoga pants since I had been at home all day, but hey, at least I was wearing a bra. ;-) The boyfriend took pity on me and wined and dined me with a glass of wine and a piece of pizza, so all was well.

So, speaking of guilty culprits my mom and my aunt (on the left...that's me on the right in the blue coat), we spent the day at the local antique mall on Saturday. Mom and Aunt both found a couple of treasures, while I actually came home empty-handed this time. I never even noticed the Maxfield Parrish print behind me until I saw this photo. There is just so much to look at, that it's easy to overlook things. I ended up zooming in on the price tag on my phone and I believe it says $269. Way overpriced! I found the same print ("Daybreak") on eBay for $98.

I love when the mail brings something "good" - a magazine, a book, a card or package from a friend - instead of junk mail and bills. Patty from Lemon Lane Style had an Instagram giveaway for her darling fabric flags ~ and I won! I played around with how to display these, and they finally ended up in a vintage milk bottle in my china cabinet.

The colors are perfect for my kitchen. Thank you, Patty!

It's another gray, cold day here with bursts of light snow. I had a dentist appointment first thing this morning and now that the Novocaine has worn off, my tooth is very sore. I have terrible dental phobia, so between being "worked up" this morning over my appointment and now with the soreness of my tooth, I am worn out. Time for a cat nap!

  1. I hope your tooth is feeling better soon. I read your comment last week about my own dentist appointment and I wanted to tell you that I have a serious phobia about going too. I actually have a very hard time with any kind of medical situation, I think I've mentioned that before. Severe anxiety that I really try hard to control, but I'm not always successful. I'm sorry you have so much trouble with your teeth, that can't help the phobia. I think your impromptu Super Bowl party sounds fun! Sometimes things work out for the best, you didn't even know you'd be seeing a friend. Those flags are very cute, they look perfect in the bottle. I hope you have a good week, Melanie.

  4. I cancelled my dentist appoint last week because I had a sore throat. I am so glad that I did as I as still have the sore throat. But now I am on antibiotics. I seriously dislike going to the dentist as well.
I locked myself out right after we moved. NO cell phone, keys or anything and with both my dogs. It was only 35 out that night. I didn't know anyone except the lady next door. She didn't answer the door the first time. She did the second time so I warmed up for about 20 minutes. I knew my husband would be home sometime. I didn't want to take both of my dogs in her house. It was a total of 1 1/2 hours. I ended up with laryngitis that time. Now we have the combination to get in through the garage. Stay warm.

  5. I am always so anxious about the dentist. I need to get some work done soon, I locked myself out of my car at the gas station once. My phone was inside and I couldn't remember a number of anyone to call. Thank goodness I wasn't too far from home and I walked back and my boyfriend took me back to get my car using the extra key to get in. I am always sure I have car keys in my hand when I get out to pump gas now. Love the 'cat nap' photo.
    hugs,
    Linda

  7. Mel - Hope your tooth is better. I too, have a dentist phobia. I had a big key issue today also. I had the three babies with me and realized I had lost my house keys. After about an hour, I found them in the floor of the car. It was a crazy hour tho with a 4 year old and 2 year old twins in the car not understanding why JuJu was in such a frenzy! LOL

    Have a great week.

  8. Oh no! I hate getting locked out and it has happened to me on more than one occasion. Sounds like yours ended up ok! Hope that tooth is feeling better soon. I just lost a bonding and am going to the dentist tomorrow. I'm already freaking out! ;)

  9. Mel, I locked myself out the other day, but luckily my son heard my frantic knocks and let me in. I'm glad you were rescued. Wine and pizza sound great. The picture of your kitty is TOO CUTE!

  10. I know how you feel about dentist appointments, Mel, so I'm glad it's over. I have to get my teeth cleaned next month and my new dental hygienist is brutal. I'm okay with that because my teeth look and feel wonderful after.

How horrible to be locked out. I always keep my garage door unlocked as you can only get in with the code or the gadget in my car. To be honest, I don't lock the front door much when I go out either--my dogs would bark and growl so much no one would venture in!!

Hurray on your win---the flags are so darn cute. Glad you had fun at the antique mall. I miss those in Michigan-they are everywhere.

    Stay warm and dry.

  11. I am glad that your friends could rescue you! I dread being locked out and if I go out of the front door I always make sure that I have a key in hand! I also dread the dentist so I understand your fear. I hope that the pain has worn off now and that you are feeling better now. xx

  13. Happy to hear that you had your phone with you and that you were wearing your bra, LOL. Seriously, that is easy to do. Once I went out the back door to get something from the shed . . . it was early morning and I still had my PJs on . . . after all it was only going to take a minute. Oh, and it was about 15 degrees outside. The door locked behind me and I ended up breaking the window on the door to get in. Then I had to cut a piece of plywood to cover the window before I could leave for work. Funny looking back, but at the time, not so much! Congratulations on your darling gift, those little flags are adorable. Now I want to make some :)
Stay warm and find a great place to hide a key :)

  14. I had to laugh at the bra. Because YES it could have been worse, and braless! :) So glad you were able to be rescued!

  15. Hope your tooth is soon feeling better. I know what you mean about having a dental phobia. Me too.

You need a hidey spot outside for an extra key to get inside. Wined and dined on pizza sounds good to me.

    Have a nice Valentine's week ~ FlowerLady

  16. When I was single and only in the Charmer a few years I locked myself out, and had to break a basement window to get in. I don't lock my front door except at night, my noisy across the street neighbors keeps a close eye on everything so no worries. Hope you tooth is feeling better and I HATE going to the dentist. I get my teeth clean by new dentistry of ultrasound and laser. Doesn't hurt at all!

  17. That could have been a cold wait if your friend hadn't been close! But at least you got pizza and wine out of it. I haven't been to an antique store in years, only GW, so your story naturally made me think of some of my old favorite places. I think I deserve a day out soon to go visit them just for the fun of seeing pretty things.

I just noticed Cathy's comment above--there's such a thing as ultrasound cleaning? I must ask my dentist about that!

  18. The back door to our house has a habit of locking on its own, but we have a key hidden for emergencies. Very annoying! I'm glad you had your phone on you and were rescued by friends.

Looks like a fun day antiquing! Kudos to you for coming home empty handed. I've been doing pretty good myself staying away from my favorite shops. I stopped in last weekend and couldn't find anything special, so I came out with my money still in my pocket.

I've got a dental appointment coming up soon, and I'm dreading it!
