inspiration for a lace curtain and gratitude

My front door has a decorative glass window that brings needed light into my darkish living room. Even though the glass is beveled with metalwork in it, I always worried a bit about the privacy factor. You can't see into the house from the street during the day, but at night when the lights are on in the living room, it's a little spooky knowing someone can somewhat see into the house. I also didn't like knowing that a stranger could walk right up to the front door and look straight into my house. A bit creepy, right?

Then I saw Alice's entryway and front door. I loved how she had a lace panel hung up across the glass window in her door and wanted to do that with mine. I asked my mom if she had a lace panel that she wasn't using and yep, she did. Mom joined us last night for dinner and brought me the lace panel. Using the inspiration from Alice, I hung the lace across a couple of 3M hooks, tied it in the middle with some twine and am really happy with the results. Of course, the lace panel isn't totally fool-proof and there's still the small side window if someone really wanted to look into my house, but it's an improvement. Plus, it looks pretty!

The curtain added some needed softness to this part of the living room, too.

Tim's been home from school since Thursday as he's on Spring Break. It's been a whirlwind of taking his car to the mechanic for some brake work, his phone with a broken screen to a repair shop, shopping for jeans and shoes, extra cooking, cleaning and laundry ~ but I'm enjoying every moment while I can. We visited our favorite coffee shop this afternoon and indulged in iced mochas. As we drove home with the sun roof open to the glorious, sunny sky, the radio blasting The Doors, and groaning to each other how our tummies ached from the chocolately caffeinated goodness, my mama heart was filled with gratitude. Tomorrow morning I will make my "famous" breakfast casserole and then Tim will be packing up his stuff to head back to school. And I will be heading to a bread-making class. I'll tell you all about that in my next post. In the meantime, I hope your weekend has been filled with inspiration and gratefulness, too.

  1. Oooh, a bread-making class! I'd like that. I'm good with the bread machine, but just learning to do it by hand. I look forward to reading about the class.

  3. I love the "fluffing" you did around the house.

I can identify with having Tim home. KC has been living in Ventura for 17 months and for 14 of those months she has been dating a guy in northern California. At the end of the month we are losing her once again - she took a job in San Francisco so that they can have a normal relationship. Today our son, his fiancee and KC spent the day on the beach with Steve and me and stayed for dinner. It was such a special day to have our family together.

  5. Your lace panel looks pretty with the light filtering through, and now you can feel more secure that nobody can see in. Enjoy your time with your son! I know how quickly those weekends pass, but you'll be immersed in bread dough before you have a chance to miss him. Have fun at your class, Melanie!

  6. I love your lace panel, Melanie. I agree with you about people being able to look into my house at night. I am a fanatic about shutting the blinds as soon as it is dark. ow wonderful that your son was home and you had such a good time together. xo Laura

    1. I shut all the blinds when it gets dark, too. We hope to see Tim again on Easter, but don't know if he'll be able to spend the weekend here again because of his job.

  7. Hi Melanie, I truly like how you hung your panel. I would never have thought of hanging that way, but it adds so much charm rather than using a curtain rod and doing it in a ho-hum ordinary fashion. I love that mirror on your wall and the bevel in your door window . . . your home is so lovely with lots of little special details here and there.
Yesterday my Steve wanted to bake bread . . . he love to cook savory and to bake bread. It was delicious, we shaded it with our neighbors. Her and I weigh in together at her house every Monday morning.
Last night she called and said after eating that bread she decided to toss her scales out the backdoor, LOL. It is so hard for us to loose weight, food is so wonderful, especially carbs (my favorite).
I'll be watching for your bread post . . . your class should be fun and yummy :)

    1. I would've never thought of hanging the lace panel like that until I saw it on that other blog. The mirror on my wall is from Meijer (grocery store chain) of all places! I tossed my scale out a long time ago. I go by how my clothes fit. And I do get weighed at my annual physical, so I do have a general idea how much I weigh.

  11. A bread making class?! How wonderful!

I've been eyeing a very similar inspiration picture for my front door. Tired of people walking up and staring right at me! ;)
