this and that on thursday

It's always wonderful to have the snow melted from your yard (finally!) but it
does leave behind the ugly truth. As you can see from this photo, we not only live
close to the road and have a teeny patch of front yard, but the ground
is just gross. It's muddy and full of dead leaves and wood chips and rocks all flown
from the street and garden beds while shoveling. Unfortunately, I can't even start
raking this spring due to my shoulder injury.

When I was just outside taking the above photo (and I nearly froze - it's only 31 degrees!),
I noticed green shoots coming out of the ground on this prairie grass plant. Hooray!
Always exciting to see the first signs and promises of spring renewal.

Did some puttering in my office...this little bunny found a home amongst the plants.

The top of the dresser got touches of spring with yellow and green.

A project that was on my to-do list got done: touching up all the white baseboards and
door moldings in the house. I'll let you in on a little secret. You don't know how dirty
your house really is until you're on your hands and knees looking at baseboards.

Tim's room/the guest room is coming along...the hardwood floors that were installed and
had some damage were repaired. We're finishing some touch-up painting, I ordered a
Roman shade from blinds.com and purchased organic cotton bedding at Target. I have
an antique twin headboard in the basement ~ Brian will bring that upstairs and we can
set up the bed.

I saw the orthopedic doctor again this week and he determined my range of
motion and strength were greatly diminished. I'm also in pain pretty much 24/7.
He thinks I now either have frozen shoulder or a tear. I had a MRI last night and
will meet back with the doctor next Tuesday to discuss results and next coarse of
action. Always a good time in the Middle Age Kingdom.

  1. I hope that you can get your shoulder sorted soon Melanie, it sounds as though it is pretty horrible. Amazing to see that your snow has finally gone, I expect that you are pleased about that, even if you do now see what work needs to be done. At least there is a chance of doing it now. Take care of yourself and I really do hope that you are better soon. xx

  2. oh no! my sister just had 2 tears and 2 spurs repaired in her shoulder 2 weeks ago. not fun but surgery was necessary. you are so right about baseboards. I usually take a swifter cloth and wipe them down every so often when things are looking alittle nasty. Good luck with the shoulder and looking forward to seeing your guest room.

    1. Sorry to hear about your sister's problems with her shoulder. I think these problems are more common that we (unfortunately) realize. Slow but sure progress on the guest room!

  4. Best of luck with your shoulder. I like the rug in your hallway. It looks very like one I got from Target earlier this year.

  5. Oh Melanie...I hope that you are able to get a simple treatment for your injury. I know from my arthritis, how very painful a shoulder can be. You can't do anything without your shoulder moving. I will pray that you don't need surgery.

  6. Hi Melanie,

You've completed a host of projects that you had set out to do and that's a great accomplishment, especially when you are suffering so from your shoulder injury!! I have to say, not that it compares to yours, but I must have done something while travelling, as I've been in pain since I landed in Toronto, and it isn't going away. Hope you are feeling better and get the right treatment for this very uncomfortable situation!

    1. It really sucks getting old, doesn't it, Brenda? Seems like once you hit 50, it's always something!

  8. I'm glad you're seeing some green! Gives us a little hope. And yes, the spring clean up is nothing to look forward to unless it's over! I hope you can still putter in your garden this summer, the very least, sit back on a lawn chair with a cool drink and admire the flowers.

Hope you get good news on the MRI. Love the floor in Tim's room.

    1. I can always putter...puttering is a good thing. The cool drink doesn't sound bad either. ;-) The floor in Tim's room is the same flooring that's in the rest of the house except for the kitchen. That's a darker hardwood.

    The wood floor is gorgeous!

    1. It's warming up a bit here, finally. I think shoulder and knee problems are pretty common as we age. Glad you like the floor!

  10. I love your yellow touches for spring. I'm sorry your shoulder doesn't seem to get better. I do hope doctors can help you, because being in pain 24/7 must get on your nerves.

    1. The pain is pretty much manageable with Biofreeze (a numbing spray) and when needed, ibuprofen. So it's not THAT bad. Trying to find a comfortable sleeping position is the worst part.

    1. Thank you, Deb. Yes, I'm at the point where I just want to know what's wrong with my shoulder and then let's move on and get it fixed - whatever it takes. It's still pretty muddy here though little bits of grass are starting to turn green.

  12. I hope you get better soon! My mom had the same problem and ended up being a tear. We just did out first Spring cleaning in the yard last weekend. It was such a disaster! :) Can't wait for green grass!
    Enjoy your weekend. Maria

  13. Your shoulder injury sounds really bad. I hope you're feeling less pain soon. The house looks great, I love the springy touches on your desk. Tim's room sounds like it's coming together nicely, I can't wait to see it when it's all done. How nice to see those green shoots, spring really is coming to you guys!

  15. I am sorry to hear about your shoulder Melanie! I know how not fun it is to live in pain each day. I hope they can figure out what it is and do something to help you.

Love the new floor! I am looking forward to seeing how the room comes together. But one question...do you often go around on your hands and knees in your house??? Lol! Had to laugh when you said that.

We have had no winter and are well into spring. We have even had some summer-like days and eaten outdoors on the terrace. What to come visit? :-)

    Hugs from Holland,
    Heidi

    1. Oh, I know you know all about living in pain every day. Sometimes being busy with projects is a nice way to kind of forget about the pain, isn't it? No, obviously I don't go around often enough on my hands and knees in the house. ;-) Just finished doing so in the bathroom (washing the floor) and will have to do so again later with some more painting! At least my knees aren't shot, lol. Sure, I'd love to visit Holland!
