de-pumpkining

It hit me today that I was tired of looking at pumpkins inside my house.
Probably because when I was running some errands yesterday,
I saw a lot of Christmas decorations. I am nowhere near ready
to be putting up any Christmas decorations, believe me. And I
firmly believe in celebrating one holiday at a time - in the proper
order. So, Thanksgiving will be first in my house.

I enjoyed the above china cabinet arrangement for six weeks, but
this morning the pumpkins were set outside for the squirrels and
chipmunks. Besides, the weather is so dreary and the outside now
so depressing-looking with no foliage, so the pumpkins kind of cheer
things up out there.

Sniff...bye-bye patio furniture and grill. And mushy, yellow hostas.

I put more pumpkins in the little welcome basket on my front porch.

I've had these two large pumpkins in front of the house the entire fall
season ~ they will stay there until the Christmas decorations go up.

White pitchers and milk glass went back in the china cabinet.
I like the cleaner look for now and it's a nice change from pumpkins in the
go-between stage of late fall and Christmas.

I am off to run a couple more errands in the rain-snow mixture.
And then I have a fun painting class tonight at a wine shop!
Happy pumpkinless Monday, everyone.

Monday afternoon update: pumpkins do not look good covered in snow. :-(

  1. I do appreciate the simple times of the year, between major holidays, when the house just looks normal. I think your pretty white milk glass and colonial style stoneware are perfect for November. The only thing I decorate at Thanksgiving is the dining room table. That is enough to make me happy, without it being "work". Of course the very next day, ALL the Christmas stuff comes up from the basement and for the next three/four/five days I decorate and tweak. :-)

    1. My kitchen table (I don't have a dining room) is still decorated for fall. :-)

  2. I like to have a clear demarcation between holidays too. I think your pumpkins look so cute on the bench and in the basket! Very rustic and it's a nice touch of bright color outside now that the leaves are down.

    1. Now they're covered in snow. We just got a dusting of that nasty white stuff.

  3. Hi Melanie, Your pumpkins look very nice outside, especially those little ones all lined up on the bench.
Have fun at your painting class. Don't drink to much wine or you just might start painting like Picasso, LOL
    Keep smiling,
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)

    1. I did have a lot of fun at the painting class, but I only had one glass of wine, lol. Perhaps if I had two glasses of wine, my painting would have been better. :-)

  4. Your pumpkins look cute and welcoming on your porch and on the bench. Snow on the pumpkin--I thought it was supposed to be frost on the pumpkins, no, not snow. I am not ready for snow yet, but flurries are forecast for here tonight. I de-pumpkined outside a couple of days ago. The fake pumpkin I had in the flower bed was deteriorated and full of sow bugs. They really creep me out, so I had to throw it away. I guess snow might have been better than sow bugs, after all.

I'm your newest follower. I read back through some of your past posts and very much enjoyed them.

    1. You are so right, Susie - frost is fine on pumpkins; snow, not so much! It's way too early for this nasty white stuff. And it is COLD here today. About 20 degrees this morning. Thanks for being my newest follower!

  5. I think that the Canadian Thanksgiving time ( around harvest time ) makes more sense than ours. It must be why everyone gets into Halloween so much now, who knows.
Snow on the pumpkins....we have our first snow ( an inch or two ) this morning! ( Western PA ) I love all of your little pumpkins in a row on that bench...pretty! :)

    1. Oh, Jemma - I would love to send the snow your way! I'm definitely not a winter person. The painting class was fun, but I didn't exactly paint a masterpiece, lol.

  7. Hi Mel, I'm not ready to give up my pumpkins just yet. One year I had an especially wonderful Cinderella pumpkin that looked great at Christmas, just couldn't work it into my decor. I love all the white in the cabinet, great to add any colors or sparkles for the holidays. xxoo

    1. That's what I was thinking with the white in the cabinet - easy to add holiday sparkle to it!

  8. Love the before and after photos of the outdoor pumpkins.

I hope your art class at the wine shop was fun. That is becoming a thing in our area now.

  9. You should bake those big ones and make pumpkin puree. You can make lots of goodies with puree. . . .

  11. Ew, ew, ew, you said the "S" word! Look what happens when you say it! I never even put pumpkins in the house anymore, but I do put them in my outdoor planters. Like you, I'm tired of them, and will soon switch over to evergreen cuttings.
