new kitchen rug

Finding a rug that works in our eat-in kitchen isn't fun. It isn't like trying to find a rug for a formal dining room. It has to be casual, durable (more on that in a moment) and a solid color because of using different colored and patterned placemats, runners and tablecloths on the table. For several years, we've had this beige sisal rug in our kitchen and it worked good enough until it started getting stained (this is where the durable part comes in) from us walking in the garage-kitchen door and the cats choosing to use the rug as their vomit depository.

I searched online for a long time, trying to find another rug that met our criteria and didn't have any luck until I started looking at indoor-outdoor rugs. I found this blue one online at Target. We put it down a few days ago and I'm still trying to get used to it. Do I love it? No. But I don't hate it either. Brian really likes it, so there's that.

One thing I'm not crazy about is the dark shade of blue. It was much lighter online. I do like that you can't tell it's an indoor-outdoor rug from afar. You wouldn't know it until you're walking on it. It doesn't have any softness under your feet (another thing I don't like).

Monkey has already lovingly left me a gift on this rug and it cleaned right up and didn't stain, so that's a plus.

Here's the door in the kitchen that goes right into the attached garage. You can see what a tiny space we have to step into - directly in the kitchen - when we come in from the garage. I keep a folded towel by the back door to spread across the floor for extra coverage or to keep our wet shoes on. Oh, to have a house with a mud room! This time of year is especially messy and dirty with snow stuck to our boots or shoes when we walk in the door. This is why the previous beige rug got so dirty. Now with this darker indoor-outdoor rug, snow, water and mud wipe right up and don't leave stains.

Still looking for a chair for our living room. I thought I finally found one on FB Marketplace a few days ago, so we went to look at it in person. It was a leather chair from Article, but it wasn't what we were looking for.

Have a good weekend...and happy Valentine's Day!

  1. I really like your new rug. Okay, I confess, I purchased and indoor/outdoor rug for my living room this winter. I got mine from Home Depot and I love it. I just thought it would be a good choice because of the dogs. I can even take it outside in the spring and run the high pressure on the water-hose over it and it's clean. Sun dry and back in the house it goes.
Thank you so much for the encouraging comment you left on my blog.. I'm waiting for Beulah to have all of her shots, so that I can board her while I have the surgery. I have to go out of town and stay over night so that they can check my eyes the next morning after the surgery. Thank you for your prayers. It's just hard doing things alone, I haven't had to in 44 years.

  2. I think indoor/outdoor rugs are a great solution for kitchens. Especially if you have pets who like to leave you gifts. (I know that challenge all too well.) I have a weirdly-sized eating area in my kitchen. At least, it’s weird in terms of standard rug sizes. I finally gave up and we just don’t have one. I don’t know if you have an IKEA near you, but they make a nice plastic tray that costs only a few dollars that I use near a back door for shoes. I tried a small bath at, but the tray works much better for me. I’ve also got small spaces, so these are challenges I know well.

  3. I quite like the new rug. I think the blue is a good contrasting color and it sounds like it is durable and a perfect choice for that space. Hope you have a good weekend. :-)

  4. I like the new rug. Indoor/outdoor is a good option for a high traffic area like a kitchen. Home decorating is a process, isn't it?

  5. I'm a fan of blue so it looks good to me. I'm also a fan of color and lots of pattern so anything goes as far as I'm concerned. :) The plus with your purchase is it is easy to clean and definitely won't show wear and tear like a light colored rug.

  6. I like the new rug also. I think it is a good color that won't show dirt and that is always a plus! Good luck with the chair hunt!

  7. I like the pop of blue, but color is such a personal choice. Our back door from the garage leads us right into the area we use for a dining room. Worst plan ever. What I would give for a mudroom, too! We talked about adding one on to the back of the house, but for a variety of reasons, it would be really complicated. We'll just have to make do.

  8. I don't even have a kitchen rug under my table but now I feel like I might want one! Because it might be easier to vacuum under it than what I am doing now. I can't believe I have never thought to do that before! But my table is round, so would I need to do a round rug? I guess I could Google that. I love IKEA for rugs but when I was there last month, they were really expensive. So I will keep my eyes open.

I like the blue rug but I get what you're saying. I think it's because of winter. Once the colors of spring and summer filter into your home you might feel differently about the rug. :)

  9. What a great idea to use an indoor/outdoor rug and I have to say I really love this one, both color and design. In fact I could see it in my living room in front of the hearth, taking the place of my IKEA brown one which is a bit dowdy!

I see your table which we've been discussing Melanie, and understand why you hope to replace it. Nice, but perhaps one similar to my farm table would work well in your space. You, like me, are dealing with 'small house' issues, but let's face it there are wonderful perks in 'coziness' and not having to clean/rattle around in a McMansion, lol!!!!
    Warm hugs - less snow.

  10. I think it's really pretty. I like that it looks a bit faded. I've often bought outdoor rugs for indoors, outdoor furniture for indoors, simply because of the durability.

  11. I have to admit I like the new rug! I’m still suffering with 25+ Year old wall to wall carpet, beige, in the living, dining rooms, hall and a different, just as ugly beige wall to wall in the bedrooms. I want to rip it all out, refinish my hardwood floor and live happily ever after! Maybe this spring, or whenever we get rid of this northern IL winter! I wadded out onto the deck to refill the squirrel feeder and almost got buried!

  12. I really like it. It adds a pop of color that is just enough but won't overtake the area. Hugs and stay safe.

  13. I love it and I love that it is indoor outdoor for cleaning. When you have pets that is a great way to go. I have been trying to find a rug for my living room and I have been looking for an indoor outdoor because of having the dog and especially in the spring when mud will be crazy. Stay warm this weekend. Ugh our Temps!!!!

  14. I like the new rug, but then blue is my favorite color ;-). I know what you mean about the cats! Why can’t they just do their “business” in the hard floors? They always want to run to a rug and do it.

  15. I like the blue rug. Your space needed color. But, I like lots of colors together in the kitchen. Put the tiniest bit of Vicks Vaporub on several places on the rug and the cats will avoid the rug. You only need to put the tiniest bit and you will not be able to smell it. Cats will.

  16. Good idea to use an indoor outdoor rug! I like the blue. If you ever need another rug that can handle cleaning, look into Ruggables. They can be put in the washing machine!

  17. Oh! I like it a lot, but I do like drama and bold colors. And indoor/ outdoor is the best for the kitchen. Every rug I have under the table is indoor/ outdoor and when I cover the chairs, it's Sunbrella fabric. You can literally spill mayonnaise on them both and it comes right out!

  18. I have to say that I would have never thought to look at indoor/outdoor rugs for this area. What a great idea! There are always spills under kitchen tables. I really like this color in your kitchen and with the white chairs too. You mentioned that it isn't as soft as you would like. Do you have a pad under it? I have a fairly thick felt pad under my kitchen rug which makes it feel rather plush.
I hope your chair shows up soon.

  19. Melanie - I like the pop of color the blue gives. I just got a rug for my kitchen. It's just regular rug but then, I don't have pets and I rarely cook. LOL. ITS JUST NO FUN COOKING FOR ONE. Stay warm and safe!
