gloomy weather, cheery valentine's day decor

This is what it's looked like here for days on end. Dreary, gray, depressing. Perfect recipe for Cabin Fever and Seasonal Affective Disorder. Looking ahead at the weather forecast, we're supposed to have one day of sunshine tomorrow ~ and it will be 48 degrees! That's a heatwave for us in January. Last year at this time, we were at -50 with the wind chill factor. I will definitely be opening some windows and airing the house out tomorrow.

I don't do much seasonal decorating anymore, but I do like to add little touches around the house. I like Valentine's day because the red and pink add touches of color to the gray winter landscape, there's no expectations with this holiday (we do not exchange gifts or go out to dinner), and HEARTS, of course!

On the dresser in the spare room...

At the end of the hallway...

In our bedroom...

Hearts in the main bathroom...

In the kitchen, the china cabinet gets some Valentine's Day decor...

And the kitchen table is all set for a snack...

Do you decorate for Valentine's Day or celebrate it in any way?

  1. So I went to the basement this morning to get some Valentines decorations out. Turns out, I got rid of all of them and now I am sad. I have been minimizing for years and never really had a lot of decor for Valentine's day but man.
I might have to get some decor this week because pink and red are really needed this time of year.

  2. Melanie, I love all of your sweet little tucked it hearts . . . tucked here and there around the house. A lovely reminder that your home is a place of love and comfort. I used to do more decorating, but now my energy is put to the needs of necessity over frills and fun :) If I have the time to do a little something for Valentine's it will probably be digging out a banner or baking heart shaped scones. Keeping it simple this year.
I love visiting your blog. It truly is a "Comfy" place, filled with love all year round.

  3. No but I did buy four red dessert plates at Tuesday Morning just now. And last week at the grocery store I bought myself a small heart shaped box of chocolates.

  5. Hi Melanie. Love all your sweet Valentine's day decor. I especially love the little pillow button hearts in your bathroom. Super cute.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  7. I actually think you do quite a lot of Valentine' Day decorating by the looks of these great photos Melanie!
Hearts and love are everywhere and looks so pretty. I will pull out the few items I've held on to - much seasonal decor has gone in the de-cluttering process - and I did pick up a pretty string of tiny pink heart lights and a few small wood hearts from Target last week.

  10. It's been gray and ick here too lately, but we haven't had any snow so that's been the saving grace. I'm super grateful for that. I think that your little fabric hearts are adorable! I have one that was made for me by a blog friend years ago and I display it all year round, but I would love to make a few more. So sweet!!

  13. Love all your touches of love for Valentine's day. The cards tuck in here and there is a nice touch. Your small pillows are so pretty!

Sure wish the gloom would go away.

  14. I love seeing all of your Valentine decorations. I have the same wooden heart on the front door:) I usually decorate for Valentine's, but I am in the middle of organizing my aunt's household and trying to get mine back in order. So, I only did a few minimal things this year. Those touches of red and pink do make everything brighter at this time of year.

  15. I love all your little fabric hearts around the house, Melanie. That's a sweet collection and I bet you keep an eye out for other ones that you can't resist. I kept scrolling back to picture #4 to look again at that sweet little black cabinet. I really like odd little pieces of furniture like that.

I hope each week this month brings you a few days you can get out and visit your favorite places without freezing. I saw on FB that you visited a favorite coffee shop. I love going to them but by the time they add all the caramel and whipped cream to my drinks it might not still qualify as coffee, more like dessert.

Sweet little cotton napkins you put in the wire basket! It reminded me to pull out the red and white ones I have to use this week. I only have a few little plainly Valentine's decor but I always want to bring home flowers and potted bulbs this time of year. We made a rare trip to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's this last week--we're much further from them now that we moved--and I indulged in an armful, could have easily bought a car full, they had so many pretty bouquets. Most of the year I'm not really big on buying flowers but something about February makes me crave them.

    I hope you're having a good weekend,
    Dewena
