books and coffee shops

Two of my favorite things in life are books and coffee shops. The more quaint, eccentric or charming a coffee shop is, the more I like it. Especially if it's not crowded and the music isn't blasting. 😉

This is my current reading stack for August, though doubt I will finish. I usually have one non-fiction and one fiction book going at the same time. But in this case, the only book in this stack that I'm currently reading is The Invitation. The book expounds on Oriah's poem of the same name. Are you familiar with it? Here's how it starts out:

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It's a little lengthy to type out or copy and paste here, so if you'd like to read the entire poem, you can do so here.

And then, bookstores ~

I discovered a new (to me) coffee shop the other day while in a neighboring town.

I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in to discover such a charming shop. There were several rooms, all filled with different wooden tables, mismatched chairs, and bookcases filled with tchotchkes and used books for sale.

When I first saw this room, there was a young woman reading in one of the chairs in back, and two other women sitting at the table, quietly chatting. The room you see at the back is a children's room, complete with high chairs, little tables and chairs, toys and books.

This will be a great spot in the winter to curl up in one of those leather chairs by the fireplace with a nice hot cup of coffee or tea. Not that I'm looking forward to winter, by any means! Just saying.

I didn't have much time to browse the books, nor read one myself while drinking my herbal iced tea, but I can't wait to go back one day when I have more time.

Do you have any independent coffee shops in your area that you especially love? What are you reading this month?

  1. What a fun concept for a coffee shop. We do have a few independent coffee shops, but they are new and modern. I like yours better.

  2. We have one that we love, it's decorated with local art and by local artists. There's always live music and very good food. That shop near you looks quite interesting and very cozy. I love discovering new places.

  5. Those are two of my favorite things, too. Coffee shops and book stores and if I happen to find a combination of both I am a happy camper. Love the shop you found. Happy weekend. xo Diana

  6. What a charming little coffee shop. I love the two rounded white chairs with the little table between them and the red lamp on top. It looks like the perfect spot for a nice long chat with a friend. There are a couple of independent coffee shops that I love to go to, but neither is right here in town. In fact, as big as our town is, I'm surprised we don't have our own. Currently I'm reading The Salt Path by Raynor Winn. I picked it up at the library, totally taken in by the cover. So far it's an interesting story.

  7. I guess I'm just cheap. I enjoy coffee at home, good old for Folgers with French vanilla creamer. I can make a whole pot for less than the price of a coffee shop cup.
I'm reading, The Beantown Girl's by Jane Healey and If You Change Your Words It Will Transform Your Life by Adam Houge.

  8. I was not familiar with that poem but printed it out after saying "yes" to myself at the end of so many of the verses. These are the kinds of conversations I always wish to have with others but so seldom do.

And your new coffee shop looks like one I'd enjoy, like dropping in at a friend's house. Of course not liking coffee, my choices are always more of a dessert drink that actual coffee. Like eating coffee ice cream, a favorite of mine.

I have 2 more books in the stack of old Cape Cod novels I like to read during the hot days of July and August that I read in bed at night, and I'm almost finished with Alexander McCall Smith's What W. H. Auden Can Do For You, and will be reading for another month probably on a big book about Nancy Lancaster that I read each morning at breakfast. Oh, and almost finished with a book that Anderson Cooper's father wrote about his family history.

Our weather forecast for this week looks to be one of our hottest so far this summer so I may get lots of reading done staying cool inside. Time enough for gallivanting around when fall comes.

  9. Such a cozy coffee shop you discovered. Wish we had ones that comfy near us. I can see hanging in there during cooler months.

    Enjoy your reading.
