friday zippo update

In my last post, I told you about Zippo being so ill. The day after he saw the emergency vet, I followed up with our regular vet who agreed that Zippo most likely had an upper respiratory infection. Even though the antibiotic that he's on won't help a virus (just like in humans), hopefully it will ward off a secondary bacterial infection. He also got a vitamin B12 shot and a Chinese herbal powder to sprinkle on his food to stop the nose bleed.

Interjection: we woke up to this nasty white stuff already this morning. And it is cold this evening. We're down to 13 degrees with the wind chill. It's way too early for this nasty winter-like weather.

Back to Zippo. I haven't seen much improvement. Every night I've been going to bed thinking I was going to wake up and find him dead. He's so congested and his nose keeps bleeding. I can't tell you how many towels and blankets I've washed, as well as having to wash Zippo's front legs and paws from the blood dripping. I read online that you can steam a cat's sinuses just like a human, where you boil a pot of water and then hold the kitty carefully over the steam with a towel over both your heads. I did that twice today and even though he got a little antsy after a few minutes, I think it did help. I'm also putting coconut oil on his raw nose to help it heal.

It's hard for Zippo to eat because he can't breathe when he eats. I heat up his food so he can smell it (cats won't eat food that they can't smell - it's a survival skill to avoid spoiled food or food that's been tampered with) and then I sit next to him with his bowl of food right underneath his nose and coax him to eat. I learned that when cats are sick and not eating enough of their food, you can give them turkey or chicken baby food. So I went to the store today and got a jar of each. I've been mixing some of it into his cat food. Believe it or not, Zippo even loves pureed canned pumpkin, so I've been giving him a spoon of that every day, too. And he's drinking water.

But. He's not out of the woods. Far from it. At his age (19-1/2), he could easily succumb to this URI. Or, if he gets worse, of course we will bring him in to the vet to have him put to sleep. I won't let him suffer.

Tim is moving out tomorrow (into his own apartment - sharing with a buddy), and I'm afraid that is really going to affect Zippo, too. Tim and Zippo are very close. Zippo sleeps on his bed every day. Now there will be no bed in Tim's room for Zippo to sleep on. I'm thinking maybe Tim can leave his comforter behind and take another one from our stash of extra blankets stored away in the basement.

Thank you all so much for your well wishes and prayers for my fur baby. I know a lot of you understand how much pets are a part of the family and how my heart is hurting. Blessings to all of you. Have a good weekend.

  1. I am so sorry about Zippo, hope he continues to get better. It is so hard when they are sick, these babies of ours worry us so much. Glad Tim is moving in with a friend, I am hoping my son will be able to do that in the next year. I love him home but know he needs to move on with his life.

  2. My heart is hurting for you. I know when my Charlie was sick and nearing the end I had to make decisions. I thought 'it was time' once but then he perked up and gave me almost another two months to love on him. Just enjoy Zippo every moment and know that I'm sending hugs and praying for you.

  3. I am behind on blog reading so I just went back to read about poor Zippo. It is so hard to see our fur babies suffer, but I can tell that you are doing everything possible to help him get better and be more comfortable. I'm sending positive thoughts for his return to good health.
Hope all goes well with the move.

  4. Oh Melanie. I have been there. My kitty was 21 when we lost her. In between there were many ups and downs, including a run in with a car that resulted in a wired jaw. I was feeling her baby food with dropper with one hand and my three month old formula with the other! The one thing I can say is that Zippo is in amazing, loving hands. Good luck to your son, too...very exciting!

  5. My thoughts and prayers for you, your family and Zippo! I hope the medication and various supplements get him thru this episode and you will get to enjoy much more time with him. It is so difficult when one of our animals is ill. I can remember a time when how much one of my cats ate (he had kidney disease) could mean it was a good day for me. Hugs.

  6. Oh dear Melanie ~ it is so hard to see our sweet furbabies suffer and go downhill. I pray that Zippo has a peaceful homegoing to his Maker. You are taking very good care of him and I'm sure he knows that. He feels all of your love.

13 degrees!!!! Yikes. I couldn't handle that. There are dark clouds around and T-storms are predicted. We could use the rain and maybe they will bring cooler temps. It's still very warm and humid here.

Love, hugs & prayers for all of you at this time ~ FlowerLady

  7. I'm so sorry to read about Zippo. Last year Piano took the same kind of flu (we call it choriza for cats in France) and he was very old as well. He did survive though. Here's what I did (in case it can help you and Zippo): I kept him warm at all times, using a hot bottle next to his pillow and a blanket when I had to go to work and I poured a few drops of essential oils (pine + tea tree + thyme) in a bowl and added some hot water on it. I placed the bowl not too close but not too far (I know, that helps!) to my cat. After a few days, the nose stopped running, but Piano was tired for at least two weeks. Essential oils are supposed to be forbidden for cats, but he was so old and so unwell... And it worked. He died later that year, but he still had many days of sleeping in the sun after that choriza thing, so it was great. I hope it'll be the same for Zippo.

  8. Oh, Melanie, I am hurting for you too. Sometimes I stare at Charlie's body to make sure he's breathing. I did the same with Abi that last week. It is excruciating. I'm here for you if you need me.

  9. I am so sorry Melanie. My heart breaks for you. It is so hard to see them sick like this and not be able to tell them you will make them feel better. Poor Zippo. I hope steaming his sinus helped. Saying a kitty prayer for Zippo that he starts to get a little better.
    Hugs,
    Kris
