slowly transitioning into fall

The signs are here. Squirrels are all over the place, running up tree trunks and fences and darting back and forth across the street, all the while with walnuts in their mouths. I see the evidence of buried treasures in my potted plants (thanks for the holes in my planters and dirt scattered everywhere, silly rodents!) and in really strange places like my grapevine wreath that's hung on a trellis!

The Black-eyed Susan and Purple Coneflower are drying up.

The trees are already changing color, if you can believe that. Seems earlier than usual this year but I think it's because we've had such a dry summer.

Sunlight is softer and fuzzy, casting a magic spell on the evening.

Technically, it's still summer. I don't like to push the seasons (except for winter - that could last a week and I'd be happy), so I'm not decorating for fall yet. I did change some things up for more of a smooth transition into fall. I'm now using subdued colors on the buffet and cuttings of sedum from the butterfly garden.

I traded the summer cotton throw for a more textured one and am using the gold tray on the coffee table again.

I love pottery, both vintage and handmade by loved ones, so I'm using a mixture on the ladder bookshelf. The two handmade bowls on the second and fourth shelves and the vase with the leaves on the bottom shelf are all made by my son.

I kept the china cabinet in the kitchen simple with more pottery...thrift shop bowls on top, my son's mugs on the other two shelves.

Otherwise, everything in the kitchen is still bright and cheerful!

Hanging on to this last week of summer...how about you?

  1. There has been a new crispness in the air during the last week . . . so I can feel fall in the air, but I'm not totally ready to say goodbye to another summer. I have to say that I truly have enjoyed everything about summer this year; it helped that it was not so terribly hot this year. The year before we had three and a half months of three digit temperatures. It was miserable! I hope to never see another summer that hot ever again.
It's funny because I have only seen one squirrel the whole time that we have lived here and at our old place, only 2 miles away, we had squirrels everywhere.
    Have a sweet weekend!

  3. I like your subtle changes. I am hanging on to summer as well. I love fall, but it means winter is on its way and like you, a week would be enough for me. xo Laura

  4. It's still way too hot here. Like 100 degrees in the shade hot. I've seen one tree turning on my way shopping one day. And some leaves falling. I'm ready for the terrible heat to go away!

  5. I'm hanging on, too...like you, winter could last a week and I'd be happy, but the rest of them I like to enjoy all the way through. The biggest change here has been the darkness. It comes much earlier now, even without the clock change. I don't like it, but it is what it is. Your place looks great. It's got a late summer glow. Perfect!

  6. Well, I was able to work outside for almost three hours this morning, here in s.e. FL so that means something to me. I still sweat buckets though and my clothes were soaked when I came in. Fall is coming. Yay!

Your home looks lovely at any time of year.

Enjoy the rest of your week ~ FlowerLady

  7. I adore that cabinet in your kitchen - so cozy!! And your spider plant is way happier than mine - what's your secret?

  8. I loved seeing your signs of fall, Melanie. It's starting here too, finally. Much less hot and some trees are changing. We don't get too many brilliant colors, aside from the bright yellow that the locust trees turn, but it's still nice to see. I love your fall decor. I was in Home Goods today and so many things were reminding me of your vignettes and displays. I often think of blogging friends when I'm in craft and decor stores, you're much more kindred spirits to me than most people I know in "real life"! :)

  9. The weather has been wonderful hasn't it? I wish it could stay this way forever. I can't believe how the tops of the trees are changing already! I've been crafting a few things and actually pulled together a fall vignette because I have some zinnia with fall color and took photos before they died! Have a great weekend!

  10. Your pre-fall touches are very nice and give off a warm ambience in the pics. I am trying to hold out as well and just doing a few, more subdued, colors around the house. Cannot believe your trees are already such pretty colors! And that nut in the grapevine wreath cracks me up! Squirrels are hilarious the way they run around this time of year!

  12. I always think that it would just be so much easier if a new season started on the first day of that month! We are starting to get a bit of color change here too although I think you have more. I am always in a hurry to say goodbye to summer, but there is a lot of clean up to do in the garden and I'm not quite ready for that yet!

  13. My rule is no fall flowers or decorations till October starts. By then, it's usually a little cooler and actually feels more fall-ish. To me, September is still summer!

  14. It is still hot and humid here so we have a ways until cooler temps hit. I am ready for the change in seasons, it will be a lovely reprieve from the heat.

  15. I have noticed the softer light like you, but the weather is still beautiful. The cats did come home tonight with a mossy scent on their fur that made me feel autumn was right around the corner!

  18. I saw your comment on FlowerLady's post and came over to "meet" you! It was fun to read through your last few posts. (We were in Middlebury yesterday to see a play and eat at Das Essenhaus, etc.) I also enjoy pottery - especially unique and hand-made pieces... I'm sure I"ll be back to see more. I hope you get good relief with your surgery. (I have had both hip and knee replacements, so know a little about surgeries.)
