poofing the pillows ~ and trying not to blow away

I was at Target yesterday looking for a replacement lampshade. Didn't find that, but I did find these two blue and yellow pillows (the ones flanking the yellow pillow) on clearance.

I love decorative pillows, but I'm a little unsure about exactly how to use them. I see all these photos on blogs and Pinterest and in magazines with couches and beds piled with pillows and they all look so effortlessly perfect. I'm amazed how some people can mix patterns too, and still make it look cohesive. Thus said, I'm not sure I'm liking my arrangement. Do I have too much going on here with pattern...the art prints, the pillows, the area rug? I wanted two of the pillows with the wavy lines, but there was only one, so I got the coordinated triangles-into-a-square one.

Speaking of pattern, there's also the curtains across the room from the couch. I was just trying to pick up the colors in the curtains and mirror.

Is this perhaps any better with just two pillows? Or, is more better when it comes to pillows? Zippo doesn't care, as long as he has his blanket.

Spring fever finally hit me yesterday, as it always does mid-late February. Where I'm longing for time outside, especially enjoying my patio and gardening. Thinking I can't stand winter one. more. day. This is a photo of my patio yesterday...with a layer of snow and covered patio furniture and grill. (Look at all the rabbit tracks! My backyard has little "pellets" all over. I think the bunnies are living under the pine trees in my back yard.)

And this is today. It was actually in the 50's, which is unheard of for this time of year. Problem is, we've had a high wind warning all day, with gusts up to 60 mph. That white plastic fencing around the air conditioner unit is now torn out of the ground. There are power outages all over (though we have been spared) and downed power lines.

Looking forward to your opinions on the pillows ~ have a great weekend. :-)

Linking up with Thoughts of Home on Thursday (so I'm a day late and a dollar short!)

  1. I love the pillows, this is my favorite shade of blue. I might put something in that shade (or close to it) on the coffee table. The pillows definitely need to stay.

  2. I like the pillows. Your curtains pull in the color. I really like your sofa.

  3. I love the pillows, Melanie...they pull out the colors in your curtains beautifully! Very pretty! We had a lot of snow disappear today, too...pouring rain and warm temps!

  4. Quite a change in the weather but your recent IG post has it getting colder again by the end of the upcoming week. My college boy in Colorado is enjoying mild temps but this is also the time of year when they start to have constant high winds. They sometimes even get dust storms like we get here. He lives in a valley and isn't far from the Great Sand Dunes. When it comes to color and pattern and pillows, I say the more the merrier. Anything goes as far as I'm concerned. I think it all looks great. Have a good weekend.

  5. Such a big change in your weather. Goofy year all over the states. We are back and forth with pouring rain and sunshine.

  6. I think it looks bright and cheerful with the pillows / the photos where people have like 10 pillows piled on a couch are clearly fake since where would a person sit without having to removed most of the pillows lol! :)

We are going to be in the 50's today; what a welcome change!

  7. I love the colors and the pillows with the wavy lines being my fav! I think they are a wonderful spot of color!!

  8. I love what you've done with the pillows. I agree, it always looks so effortless (as yours do) when other people do it, but I sure struggle with the darn things. I'm not into matchy/matchy, so I like the way all the fabrics in your house complement one another.

Now, I need to go take a look at my pillow arrangement!

  9. Melanie, I prefer it with two pillows on one end and perhaps one of the pillows just peeking out from behind the blanket. Eh, what do I know?! :D Love the cats!

  10. I like to use pillows as the main source for pops of color and have no hesitation when it comes to mixing things up. The only "rule" I follow is to have at least 3 other things going on in a room in the same color. Someone mentioned adding something to the coffee table with pillow colors in it....absolutely agree. I would also use that 3rd pillow.

Wow, it sounds like Mother Nature is having mood swings with the weather! We've experienced some of that, too. Mostly we are just barreling through Spring and headed straight for Summer!

    I'm now following with GFC!
    Warm hugs,

  11. My sister-in-law had so many pillows on her couch one time that she found me and my mom sitting on the floor, because there was nowhere else to sit. She got rid of them after that LOL I usually do four pillows, two on each side, but I think Zippo would object, so I'd use just the two on one side. BUT that's me and it isn't my home, darlin'. Do what YOU like :)

Oh and congratulations on the soup recipe win!

  12. Put the yellow pillow and the triangle pillow on one end, then the wavy line pillow on the other end, on top of the afghan, then the cat next to the pillow. See if you like that. :)

We are so glad you are here.
I just read all of the great pillow placing advice above.
It is going to look wonderful.

  14. I don't think it matters as long as the arrangement pleases you. I live in a very windy place too! It was howling a few days ago. Been in the eighties. Next week will be freezing.

  15. I'm with you. I enjoy looking at decorating mags with lots of coordinating pillows, but I don't really want that for myself. Too much work fluffing them, and too much money to have that many pillows. I'm a symmetrical kind of gal. I always "match" the ends of my sofa, with pillow or pillows the same at each end, and sometimes an accent in the middle. Right now I have a single rusty orange pillow at both ends that coordinate with the orangey lampshade behind the couch. In the middle is a printed pillow with the same orange and other colors from the room. But my daughter always scolds me for being too "matchy matchy" in general, so what do I know? I do have many other colors in the room too.

  17. I always say go with your gut. If it looks and feels right to you, then you're good. I think it's clear that your kitty really likes the way the room looks! ;)

  18. I LOVE your pillows...Target has such a nice variety. I don't think it matters how you arrange them, I get ideas all the time and I think, "Is this the right way?" and then I just toss them around however they look best or feel comfy. So whatever you do is perfect. I personally would put the pillow with the blue accents on the throw...it would look united. Okay---I'll sush!!

Loved this spring like weather but man, those winds were scary-especially since we are surrounded by huge old trees. Eeeeew.

I hope you get and read the book I am. I am flying through it and I learned one of her previous novels is very good according to a comment. Love when we find a good author.

  19. I love lots of pillows, but when she comes to the Cottage, my mom always removes one pillow from my couch... So I guess it depends on taste? At least your pillow are perfectly colour coordinated, I love them.

  20. I love the look of lots of pillows, and yours are the perfect colors along with your throw to pick up the colors in your mirror frame. The pretty yellow and white tulips bring a touch of spring to your room, too!

We had pouring rain on Friday, but still lots of snow left. The bunnies must be looking for plants to munch on!

  21. Hi Melanie,

I think you've done a fine job of integrating your aqua/white/yellow colour scheme. As everyone says, it's what feels right for you. Is it pleasing to your eye, does it calm your soul, does it feel cozy and warm and wonderful? Then, it's perfect, for it is personal and unique and totally you!

    Hugs,
    Poppy
P.S.: It is clear, though, as you said, Kitty, couldn't care less; he's comfy as long as he's got his cover!

  22. I love your pillows. I've always done two and two on the couch with pillows but lately I keep loving the look of none of the pillows matching. As long as the colors coordinate you can do anything you want. :)

Thank you so much for sharing this with Thoughts of Home on Thursday. We love having you and I definitely love having you Poof the Pillows with me. :)

    Pinned.

  23. I am also pillow challenged. If I find something that works and I like, I tend to keep it the same way forever. The other problem I have with so many beautiful pillows is that hubby has to take them all away when he sits down and guess who gets to put them all back. :-))
Your living room looks so pretty, all the patterns working beautifully together.
