bringing cheer indoors via greenery

Last week I was on the hunt for succulents. I had this idea to plant little ones in
various milk glass containers. Thought they'd be really pretty in a grouping.
But it turned out that Home Depot - where I went shopping - didn't have any
succulents. I did find two plants that were on the clearance rack simply because
one was in a Christmas container and the other in a football container. For $3.50
 each, I couldn't resist.

I normally repot plants on my front porch, but seeing it's -8F out there and my
porch is snow-covered, the kitchen counter had to do. Yeah, it was messy,
but I used a garbage bag to contain most of the dirt. The rest was easily
vacuumed up.

When you put a grouping of plants in front of a sunny window, it adds
just the right amount of cheer to a room. And who doesn't need that when
all you see outside is bare branches and snow-covered ground?

It brings a teeny bit of hope to seeing greenery and flowers outside again...
eventually. Sure seems like a long way off.

A lot of schools and businesses are closed today and tomorrow because of the frigid
temperatures. Wind chills are supposed to be as low as -45F. I'm glad Tim's college
campus is closed since he walks to and from school. What are you doing on these
long, cold winter days? How are you bringing some cheer into your home?

  1. It is cold here but not nearly as cold as you.
Cold enough that little JJ, with a stuffy nose, and I are just staying home.
    Your plants are beautiful.

  2. It is cold here and snowy. This morning I did not venture out to work. The roads were complete ice. I love your little table with all the greenery. I too have a couple of house plants that I gaze at during the day. I don't want to see any more snow ~ I am dreaming of spring ;-)

    1. Trying to drive on ice is much worse than driving on snow. I don't blame you for staying home. I don't want to see any more snow either, but unfortunately, more is on the way.

I couldn't live in a house without plants. Yours are delight. That bit of red on that new plant's leaves will glow !

    1. I didn't know you didn't have any snow in your area right now. We have plenty of that nasty stuff along with the cold. From all the lovely things you find at your flea market, it must be a good one.

  6. Hi Melanie;
Wow, you do have cold weather! I heard we are going to go to 30 below here in Northern Ohio, thats way to cold for me. I am staying in the house as much as I can. Your plants are lovely, I use to have my bay window filled with plants. But my kitties decided it was great fun to try to jump up and dig in the dirt or eat the plants. What (if anything) do you do about your kitties with the plants? Love and Hugs, Nana

    1. Anything below zero is way too cold! Believe it or not, my cats don't bother the plants. Monkey used to when he was younger...I've had plenty of spilled plants and broken pots.

  7. Your plants look beautiful grouped together like that. I like succulents too, maybe because I have a harder time killing them. :) I used to have a jade plant I really liked. I think I had to give it away before a move. I hope you stay warm, that cold sounds really brutal.

    1. Too funny...I actually have a harder time with succulents than I do regular house plants!

  8. I've been going outside and will again tomorrow! I love your plant grouping in front of the window and want to pick up a few plants myself for a terrarium. They seem to peaceful and calm. The suns been out the last few day so it looks pretty and warm. I had a glass of wine with dinner tonight and that brought a little bit of cheer...if you know what I mean!

    1. I love terrariums; think they're so pretty. I had one last year with succulents in it, but they all died. I had a glass of wine with dinner last night - cheers!

  9. Your greenery looks pretty in new pots and I know you need that green color right now.

I am looking for ideas for drought tolerant plants. We have had no rain and i am afraid that no rain will be the new normal. Our lake/reservoirs are drying up. I need to plant pretty flowers that don't take too much water.

    1. I've heard that So Cal desperately needs rain. You might be relying on house plants more than usual, too.

  12. Love your collection of pretty potted greenery by the window, so very cheery, indeed!

I can't complain about not having flowers outside my door, even in the middle of winter. My pink and orange potted geraniums are actually flourishing, even with the wicked wind storm we had the other day. I completely forgot to move them onto the porch for protection, but they managed just fine!

    1. If I can't have any greenery or flowers outside this time of year, may as well make the best of it and at least have plants indoors, right? I think they add so much to a room - color and beauty, not to mention cleaner air.

  13. Your plants are lovely!! I am in the process of "planting" a dish garden with succulents, for my boss. He loves having a plant in his office, but they generally don't do well because of lighting problems. I'm hoping that the succulents will do better with the flourescent overhead lights.
I just have to ask though...how do you manage to have such beautiful plants with your kitties in residence??? We have ONE cat and she will gnaw on any plant she can get to. Of course she can get almost anywhere she likes :^(
    Blessings,
    J
