for today

For Today

Looking out my window ~
I see hazy morning light and snow on the ground. So does Monkey.
After getting 5" of snow yesterday, it's frigidly cold here again. It was -3F when I woke up this morning. We're due for more snow this afternoon into tonight.

I am thinking ~
About the day ahead of me. I have homemade chicken stock going in the Crockpot; I need to do my yoga practice, clean cat boxes, do laundry, and work on an ongoing project in the basement. This afternoon, I need to start dinner, which will be a vegetarian jambalya.

I am thankful ~
That I don't need to run any errands today.

One of my favorite things ~

Fresh flowers in the house, even in winter. Especially in winter!

I am creating ~
{whether you are a knitter, mixed-media artist, enjoy scrap-booking, etc., share}
A cozy corner in the spare room. This is a naked IKEA chair. The slipcover was dirty and dusty from this chair being stored in the basement, so I washed it yesterday and now it's hanging to dry. The slipcover is the original that came with the chair - it's black - so next time I go to IKEA, I'm picking up a white slipcover.

I am wearing ~
Yoga pants, a long-sleeved cotton shirt with a tank top underneath, thick socks.

I am reading (read) /watching (watched) / listening to ~
{share favorite titles, give a book review or pass along a current movie, podcast, music video, or television series you are enjoying}
Just started The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg last night.

The only TV show I watch is This is Us. Did you see last night's episode after the Super Bowl?!

Music...I've been listening to "coffee table jazz" on Spotify, playing it through the Bose speaker in the living room. The music is very relaxing.

I am hoping ~
that the groundhog was wrong and that there won't be six more weeks of winter.

I am learning ~
that chopping vegetables can be very cathartic.

In my kitchen ~
{share your kitchen adventures, weekly menu, as well as recipes}
Chicken carcass and vegetable scraps for broth...

Paleo blueberry muffins (made with almond flour and pure maple syrup)...

Chopping vegetables for homemade soup yesterday...

Getting ready to make the veggie jambalya...

The jambalaya recipe is from this cookbook...

Post Script ~
{add a favorite link that you would like to pass along. It can be someone else's website, etsy shop, instagram feed, facebook link OR it can be your own}
I love this house! It's a cottage in Little Rock, Arkansas designed by Kathryn J. LeMaster. The colors, design and collections are so charming.

  1. Love the cat, isn't it nice just to stay home and enjoy your environment?

  2. Wow! Excellent job with the questions, Melanie! This took a while, I bet. I always love all your domestic details, my favorite part of any blog.

    I love Elizabeth Berg and just picked up one of hers I hadn't read at Goodwill this morning--Open House.

    I can easily picture you today, snug as a bug in your home, which by the way I think is every bit as beautiful as the one in the link!

    Hunker down there in your cozy house,

  4. I love this post. I'm going to check out the Daybook now. I enjoyed seeing all these little bits of your day. Isn't it fun? I just love this so much. It's the best thing about blogging, I think. I have to confess that I don't watch This Is Us. I hear all the time how good it is and it sounds great, but I feel like it would be bad for me, like it would trigger every emotional issue and anxiety issue that I have, so I haven't tried it yet. Maybe sometime in the future, though. I watched the Super Bowl and thought about how cold it was in the Midwest. I'm sorry to hear it's still so cold there today. I hope you get some more springlike weather very soon.

  8. Your cozy corner is looking very cozy. I loved The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg. I picked it up at the library thinking I would not like it but why not give it a try. I could not put it down. A quick read and so sweet. I hope you post your opinion of the book. Enjoyed all your photos and yummy food.

  12. For today
    I am wearing a dress because my skinny jeans wont' fit over my knee brace
    I am reading a John Grisham because I'm in the mood for a quick easy read
    I am loving all the flowers in my garden
    I am dreading cleaning house because it has gotten away from me these last few days with an injured knee
    I am catching up on blog reading

    Have a great day and weekend!

  13. The chicken broth looks like it would be quite flavorful with all the vegetables in it. The bouquet of flowers is so beautiful (and needed) when the weather is bitterly cold!

  14. I just loved this post and my cat Kanga would like to say 'Hello" to Monkey and tell him that they are soul mates in regards to sitting on clean laundry or any new piece of paper or fabric laying around the house! :)
