vintage suitcases used as an end table ~ tweaking in the living room

I last left you here...where I was moving tables and was using the black cabinet as
an end table in the living room.

That black cabinet didn't seem "right" to me, so I decided to play around
with vintage suitcases/trunks. I'm liking this arrangement much better. This
lamp base was my grandma's. The suitcases - both thrifted over the years.

Can you tell this is Zippo's favorite napping spot? He's in the original (first)
photo and now this one!

That black cabinet used to be here next to the black ladder bookshelves. I moved
the cabinet to the end of the hallway and then made a new arrangement using a
vintage suitcase and  wicker chest, a stool, and a bunch of plants.

This area in front of the windows is always hard to decorate, as it's right when
you walk in the front door. The black chair was a long ago Goodwill find and the
little table belonged to my grandma.

And I just have to tell you all ~ good news on the AC and furnace front! My friend's
son, who does HVAC on the side, came over yesterday and was able to fix the
problem. It was the transformer on the furnace. Like I've said, I know we're living on
borrowed time considering both units are the original of the house - 26 years old! -
but with living on one income right now and a kid in college, the huge expense of
having to replace both units would've been...well, basically impossible. I'm incredibly
grateful that it was something relatively simple and that the cost wasn't too much.

  1. Hi Melanie, I love suitcases as tables. I have two stacks of them here. That is excellent news about the air system. Olive

    1. I wish I could find more at a decent price. I've seen some at the local antique mall, but they're quite pricey.

  3. Wow, what a relief, about the furnace/ac, Melanie! LOVE your suitcase arrangement by the sofa; so warm and nostalgic of times gone by. Also, love your grandmother's little side table and it looks perfect paired with the chair. Zippo must be so comfy in his mommy's comfy house!

  5. I love the stacked suitcases, I have one so I need to find a few more. I'm happy your HVAC worked out in your flavor, but anything that old is due to die! Don't you just enjoy moving things around, makes it seem like a whole new room. Have a great day!

  9. Oh Melanie, now you have me wishing I hadn't sold old suitcases instead of saving them to stack for an end table. I love that look! Your home is so inviting!!
So glad you were able to get your AC fixed. I'm the air conditioning queen. :-)

  10. Such good news about the HVAC! Yay! I love the idea of old suitcases as tables. I remember my parents inheriting some very old suitcases when a relative died and they were so beautiful but were all moldy inside. I'm still disappointed about it, years later! :)

    1. I've smelled some gross old suitcases, too. I wonder if you have to store them a certain way - maybe stuff them with newspaper?

  11. Melanie,
This is good news about the HVAC, I am so happy for you-we are holding our breath on our units! These suitcases are just perfect, I had an old one that was my sisters, but it got lost somewhere in some move and I just hate it!

    1. Ah, so you're holding your breath on the AC and furnace, too? That's too bad that you lost your sister's suitcase.

  12. Hi Melanie, I love what you are doing around your home . . . very Pottery Barn, and I love that look. I also enjoyed the post before this one . . . Love, love, love those wind-chimes and your idea to use coffee filters in that colander is genius. Wow, I certainly used the word love a lot in this comment, but your home is so delightfully charming and full of little unexpected surprises. To me, those are the things that make a house a home :)
    Have a wonderful weekend.
