a little switcheroo ~ and tree trimming

My living room makes furniture placement difficult. I don't have a foyer, so you walk
right into the room. And the only windows are "right there". On the other side of the
windows, there's an angled wall with a fireplace. Previously, I had a little black chair and
my grandma's round vintage table in front of the window.

I kept staring at the window space thinking it needed something more in the middle.
Then it hit me yesterday that what it needed was height. So I grabbed a stool from the
kitchen and placed a big spider plant on it. Much better, I think.

And then I put Grandma's table where the stool used to be.

It's a hot and steamy week here in northern Illinois. In fact, the rain is falling and
thunder booming as I type this. We had our neighbor's mulberry tree trimmed back to
her property line early this morning before the storms came in. Monkey-man got it
all done just in time. And I was able to use the leaf blower to get all the fallen mulberries
(man, those things are messy!) off the patio and move the patio furniture back into place.

So much better. Now all those nasty mulberries won't be falling all over our
patio, plants, roof and gutters. We'd been dealing with that mess for years.
Couldn't even use our patio because it rained tons of mulberries every day ~
and then they'd rot and stink and then the flies would have a field day. Not to mention
how the berries would clog the gutters and start to damage our roof.
Relief.

  1. I can understand your problem with the Mulberry tree. We have them back in the woods where they do no harm.

  2. We have a mulberry tree that we want to take down, but the branches are into the electric and phone lines, so no one wants to touch them. The power company is going through town this summer trimming trees, but they won't do my tree because "it's not a main line". Argh. There is mulberry bird poo everywhere...

    1. At least for a few years when the tree starts growing back long branches that overhang our property again!

  4. Yea about the tree trimming!
I like your spider plant, do your kitties bat at the babies hanging down from it?

    1. This spider plant has already been divided a few times! Monkey used to bother the babies on all my spider plants, but now that he's older he doesn't bother them anymore.

    1. Yesterday afternoon as I was looking more at the tree, I saw one big branch waay up there that he missed. And it's dropping the berries onto the patio. Oh well, better than dozens of branches like it was before!

  6. I never knew a mulberry tree could cause so many problems.

We had to trim our back neighbors hedges last summer because they were encroaching on a tree in our garden. Our next door neighbors are worried that the whole mess will come crashing down into their yard one day because everything is top heavy. But, the back neighbors say it isn't their problem.

    1. Mulberries are nasty, Carol! They drop everywhere and not only do they stain, but they rot and attract flies and mosquitoes. Oh, the joys of dealing with neighbors, huh?

  7. I like the changes you've made in your living room, Melanie. I don't have any living plants indoors because I have a problem remembering to water them!

We've got 3 large birch trees that make a mess in our yard, but not as bad as your neighbor's tree. Now you'll be able to enjoy your space outdoors!

    1. I have a lot of indoor plants...I'm pretty good at remembering to water them. There's some plants that do fine without frequent watering...spider plants are pretty forgiving, for one. I am hoping we can enjoy more patio time without all the rotten mulberries, too!

  8. I was just wondering if you ever thought about using a small wooden screen to make yourself an entrance way? I imagine it must be awkward to step right into the room. And it must blow leaves and snow right into the room!

    1. Put a small wooden screen...where? There's nowhere to put one! No, leaves and snow don't blow right into the room...our porch is only open on one side plus we have a bit of an overhang.
